PAIN: Emotional pain is something not well understood. Diane Ackerman talks about why and how humans feel pain in the Pain, Easing Pain and The Point of Pain sections of the touch chapter of her book. Emotional and physical pain are completely different, but I've found in many humans, including myself, that a way to subside emotional pain is to create physical pain. Emotional pain can numb a person in many ways, and physical pain can remind us that we can and will feel again. For this assignment I decided to do a performance art piece. In this minute long video, I repeatedly punch a sign. "Shifting your attention to something else will distract you from pain; pain requires our full attention." -Diane Ackerman KISS:
While reading the First Touch and Kiss sections of the Touch chapter, I was intrigued by the thought of romantic touch for the first time. The sensation is awfully tactile. I was reminded of a Sufjan Stevens song, “The Mystery of Love”. The lyrics read: Oh to see without my eyes, the first time that you kissed me. Touch, especially kiss, is so integral to the process of love that you truly can “see” without your eyes. I made an 8x8 inch digital illustration in Adobe illustrator of two people kissing close up. I added in some lines of texture to feel the radiating energy of first touch. Behind the image, fairly faded, are the lyrics that inspired me. “…we kissed timelessly, because lovers throughout the ages knew our longing; we kissed wildly, almost painfully, with tough, soul stealing rigor; we kissed elaborately, as if we were inventing kisses for the first time…”- Diane Ackerman
